The West Midlands has the lowest levels of adult participation in sport and active recreation and high obesity levels with associated poor health and health inequalities.
We aim to address these issues by capitalising on national programmes of delivery like Change 4 Life and Living Well, and encourage innovation through our partnerships at all levels to achieve our aims and create a real and lasting legacy from the 2012 Games for the West Midlands.
We will also utilise the demonstration and festival effects to ensure that a joined up approach is taken with the West Midlands Culture Programme for 2012 to drive up community participation in the region.
Our key aims are:
To deliver one sustainable Community Games event per sub-region.
To achieve a further 200,000 adults being active in physical activity for 30 minutes, three times a week, with 100,000 of these participating in sport.
To contribute to achieving 60% of 5-19 year olds receiving 5 hours of PE and Sport per week.
To support the development and improvement of sports facilities in the region including projects for access, events and elite sport.
To support aspiring young 2012 potential athletes by promoting the London 2012 Get Set Education Programme in schools and the Playground to Podium project which aims to get more disabled people taking part in sport and physical activity, identify talent and support progression in sport.
