When London won the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 it did so on the back of its promise to make the 2012 Games a Games for the whole of the UK and not just for London. It also promised to put culture back at the heart of the Games – as it had been originally when Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the Modern Olympic Movement in the 1890s.
